ENG 245(C) - Women, Gender, and Sexuality in Literature Credit(s): 3 MassTransfer Block Code: Humanities/Fine and Performing Arts Knowledge of Diversity Code: KOD This course examines how literary works represent issues of femininity, masculinity, non-binary gender, and sexuality, with particular attention to women writers and protagonists. Students will read works from varied historical time periods which might range from ancient times until the present day, and from varied genres including poetry, prose, drama, and literary essays. Assigned literary works will also demonstrate how gender and sexuality are influenced by other aspects of identity, such as race, class, region, and disability. Students might focus on gendered stereotypes; they might focus on specific literary genres such as the sentimental novel; or they might read literary texts through interdisciplinary approaches to queer theory, gender studies, or women-of-color feminism.
