The Deaf Studies Certificate provides first-year students with foundational knowledge in American Sign Language (ASL) and an introduction to the culture and history of Deaf people.
PROGRAM OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
- communicate with Deaf/hard-of-hearing people at an advanced beginner level in American Sign Language
- demonstrate respect of and an understanding towards the Deaf/hard-of hearing population as well as its culture and history
- provide resources for Deaf/hard-of-hearing people
- educate other people about Deaf people and provide deaf-related resources
- advocate with the Deaf/hard-of-hearing community relating to sensitive issues
This certificate program is an ideal choice for students majoring in other degree programs as it will add knowledge and specialized skills in the workforce.
Students are encouraged to enter this certificate program in the Fall semester to complete in one year.
Although learning ASL is a part of the certificate goal, this certificate is not designed to lead to employment where ASL fluency is required.
