PROGRAM OVERVIEW

An A.S. degree in chemistry is a quantitatively focused program that requires additional math and physics courses. This will allow students to transfer to a program offering either a B.A. or B.S. degree in chemistry or related science. This degree prepares students for work as a laboratory technician in such areas as biotechnology, environmental studies, and food technology. In contrast to the A.A. degree in chemistry, this program only requires 6 credits in social sciences and 6 credits in the humanities.

Transfer students must determine their electives based on the requirements of the institute to which the student is transferring.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • use the terms, concepts, and laws of general, inorganic, organic chemistry, physics, and mathematics to solve quantitative word problems
  • state and explain the terms, concepts, and laws of general, inorganic, organic chemistry, physics, and mathematics using written language, equations, diagrams and examples
  • collaborate in teams and follow standard operating procedures to carry out laboratory investigations in chemistry and physics
  • make predictions for chemical and physical behavior in the laboratory based on the laws of chemistry
  • analyze and interpret results from laboratory investigations in chemistry and physics and demonstrate critical thinking

SUGGESTED ELECTIVES: 10 CREDITS

Sufficient to complete 60 credit graduation requirement 1, 2; any course listed in the catalog is acceptable

TOTAL: 60 CREDITS

NOTES

1Note that students who have completed MTH 108  Pre-calculus (4 credits) or MTH 104  College Algebra (4 credits) prior to beginning Calculus I could apply their credits toward their suggested electives as well.

2Students intending to transfer to the University of Massachusetts in either a BA or BS in chemistry are strongly encouraged to take BIO 107 , as it is equivalent to BIO 151 at UMass, which is a program requirement for their bachelor’s degree programs.

Students unsure of whether to select the AS or AA  Chemistry options are encouraged to reach out to the department for more information.

This program qualifies for MassTransfer, which guarantees credit transfer to Massachusetts state colleges and universities. MassTransfer will also grant students automatic acceptance to certain state colleges and universities by achieving the minimum grade point average and the HCC degree.

Depending on course selection, 50% of this program can be completed online. Go to Online Learning  for more information.
