HIS 114(C) - Immigrant City: Community Organizing in Holyoke Credit(s): 3 MassTransfer Block Code: Humanities/Fine and Performing Arts This course focuses on Holyoke as a site of community organizing and placemaking by immigrant and migrant groups during its periods of industrialization (1849-1920) and deindustrialization (1920-present). We will explore the making of a planned industrial city and investigate the experience of several key immigrant and migrant groups - principally Irish, French Canadian and Puerto Rican - using both primary and secondary historical sources, as well as fiction. We will pay particular attention to the strategies and tactics these groups used to identify how to mobilize social power to meet their community needs.
