COM 214(C) - Social Media: More Than Just Friends Credit(s): 3 MassTransfer Block Code: Humanities/Fine and Performing Arts This course explores the world of social media. It begins by tracing the historical evolution of social media in order to understand what has changed over time, what has worked successfully, what has failed, and why. A major part of the course centers on understanding the social, cultural, and political impact of social media. Topics include the culture of friendship, social capital and publicly displayed social networks, fan sites and parasocial interaction, social media and crime (i.e., bullying), social media marketing, and the ability of social media to mobilize groups of people for political purposes.
