Credit(s): 3

Epidemiology, the study of distribution and determinants of health issues and diseases in populations, is considered the foundational science of public health. This introductory course will take students through the history of epidemiology, the sources of data used in epidemiology, and application of epidemiologic methods to study disease patterns and disease outbreaks. Throughout the semester, both infectious and chronic disease epidemiology will be addressed by exploring study designs, disease etiology, and health information literacy in diverse settings. Students will use critical thinking and quantitative reasoning skills to gather information, form hypotheses, and investigate the who, what, when and where of public health issues.
